Welcome to Randolph Downs

Thank you to the Kotlowski family for allowing Broomfield School to host our horse trek event in this beautiful part of North Canterbury. 

​

This is a general ride brief and information. When you ride out on Sunday, you will be giving a short safety briefing at the gate as you leave. 

​

Parking

​​

Parking and registration will be in a paddock opposite the entrance to Randolph Downs Farm. Clear signage will be displayed.

Please ensure you are parking to maintain some distance with others. If you are putting up pens, please make sure your gate entries are not next to other pens. Please be extremely considerate where you park and set your pens up, keeping in straight lines and rows as much as possible.

Lunch

A Broomfield school fundraising lunch is available for an additional cost of $20. Our hungry riders will have the choice of artisan breads, quality ham, salad and dressings. There will be a vegetarian option available, which is also gluten free. This will be finished off with your choice from a selection of sweet treats and fresh fruit. A bottle of water will also be available.

If you haven't pre-registered for your lunch and you wish to buy one, bring cash on the day. Lunch will be served at base after your ride so bring snacks and water for along the way.

Soft drinks and bags of lollies will be for sale on the day so bring cash!

General housekeeping

Rubbish:

This event is being held at a working farm. It is suitable to leave manure/hay/feed behind. Absolutely no rubbish is to be left at base or on the track. If you drop something, please ensure you pick it up.

Fire extinguisher:

There will be a fire extinguisher at base. Additionally, each marshal will have one in their vehicle along the trek. Any emergency needs are to be reported to a marshal as soon as possible. Please use your common sense around this.

Emergency Contact:

A list of contacts will be given to riders at check-in, in case of emergency.

On Track

 

Track manners:

Please be courteous of other riders. If you would like to pass, please ask if it is okay and give the rider or group plenty of room. There will be some common ground on the track, so if everyone heads out on the left and in on the left where possible that will help with flow.

Even if your horse is friendly, please keep space between you and other horses. Horses with red ribbons in their tails should be treated as if they could kick. Sorry no stallions allowed. You should give all horses as much space as possible for their safety and yours. 

 

Markers:

Markers will be placed clearly along the track to mark your way.

Track:

Track terrain is a mixture of 4WD gravel farm tracks, dirt racks and grass paddocks. Shoes are recommended for your horse. If your horse is barefoot we recommend boots. The track is mainly undulating with some straight stretches and one steeper climb onto Mt Brown for the views. Ride out is at your own leisure between 9.30 - 11am.

Age limit:

Adults are responsible for children 16 years and under. Children 13 years and under must be accompanied by an adult on the trek.

Riders

• Waiver to be signed on arrival. You must show your rider number to an official at the start line before you enter the course. Marshals may ask for your rider number along the way for safety purposes.

• Children 13 years and under must be accompanied by an adult.

• All riders will attend a safety briefing before they ride out. 

• Helmets must be worn.

• Appropriate footwear must be worn.

• If passing another horse or group, please be mindful, do not race past. Riding etiquette applies at all times.

• No smoking/vaping/alcohol/drugs while riding or at base.

• No dogs.

• Horses prone to kicking must have a red tail ribbon. (Please provide your own)

• No stallions.

• You are responsible for the security of your own truck/float and belongings.

• Riders should carry their own water.

• All tack and rider equipment should be in good, safe and serviceable condition.

• Please bring sunscreen/sun protection and water for yourself.

• Marshals will be wearing high viz.

• If you or your horse should have an accident or see an accident, please inform those in front and notify a marshal as soon as possible. The marshal will liaise with first aid personnel regarding location, nature of emergency and make suitable arrangements. They will have radio or phone contact with base.

• There are two areas with limited cell phone coverage, this will be covered at your onsite briefing. There will be marshals in these areas.

All Riders ride at their own risk. All Riders under 16 years must have an adult's signature. Children 13 years and younger must be accompanied by an adult on the trek.

• There will be no refunds 48 hours prior to the trek date.
